Taking a Break to Give Back

In the crazy, fast-paced world of social media advertising, it’s easy to get caught up in sales and management and deliverables and stress, stress, stress… and we sometimes forget about the community around us. Volunteer work is one of those items that usually goes on the to-do list under Someday/Maybe/When I Have Time. Fortunately, Agencies in Action is here to easily reconnect agencies with the real world by matching them with nearby soup kitchens for volunteer opportunities.

To join, agencies simply need to commit six people to volunteer once a month at a nearby soup kitchen. Agencies in Action will find the nearest soup kitchen and connect the agency with the organization to get the ball rolling. From there, agencies just need to schedule their volunteer work and find a few people willing to tear themselves away from work for a few hours to give back to the community.

Big Fuel joined Agencies in Action in January and so far, we’ve had two volunteer shifts at the Grand Central Neighborhood Center. We gladly taken a break from work and donned our hairnets to help serve food during the lunch shift, and we’re looking forward to another shift later this month!

With the financial calamity going in the past year, we sometimes found ourselves losing perspective and not appreciating the small securities that we have in my everyday life. It’s easy to get stressed out over finances and management issues and forget the value in simply having food on the table and a warm place to eat every day.  In New York City especially, we often become numb to the sight of people sleeping on the street and forget that each person has their own story. By joining Agencies in Action, we get the chance to help these people regain at least one secure feeling- that they will eat for that day. And as an added bonus, we give ourselves an adjusted frame of reference for our own stresses.

And in keeping with the social media theme, you can find Agencies in Action and the Grand Central Neighborhood Center on a variety of social networks. It’s proof that you can use social media to build a community to work together for a greater good!
